on service pack 2 for win2000....

i installed sp2 last night. first i did the requisite defragging and imaged the partition so i could restore the entire os if i was displeased with how the service pack was behaving. i even took 2 minutes to pop the w2k 'emergency repair disk' into the floppy drive and update it (start\programs\accessories\system tools\backup\welcome tab\emergency repair disk).

the download took almost an hour, as i commented the other evening, and that's with cable modem. not good, and perhaps my dl speed isn't what it should be.

the install also took a long time, 20-30 minutes. a lot of that was taken up by the creation of a backup folder for uninstalling sp2. as spytrdr pointed out yesterday, that folder is named $NTServicepackUninstall$ and it's placed in the systemroot (WINNT) folder.

the uninstall folder is a big 'un...i'm seeing 889 files taking up 158mb (103mb on disk, so some must be zipped). the 852 service pack files themselves are stored in a WINNT folder called (surprise) ServicePackFiles and they take up 165mb.

as for immediate effect, i encountered small probs with having to reconfigure a couple firewall rules. blackice defender had something to say about sp2, as did zonealarm. essentially, the service pack installs something called Services & Controller app, and zonealarm prompts for permission for it to access the internet.

after messing around with a couple firewall settings, i was back in business, and everything has been smooth since. there are some driver searches i want to do to see if compatibility has been changed that way, and i'll just continue to use w2k with the service pack and see what i notice. unlike frank, i have not been experiencing hardly any probs that i can think of with the os, so it was curiosity that motivated me to install the ms service pack. knowing that i could restore everything back to its prior state in a few minutes using driveimage was also a motivator. <g3>

i'll post any other differences i may come across.

:)
