Sony Computer, AOL Tie-Up Gives PlayStation2 Users Access to AOL Services
May 17, 2001 (TOKYO) -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and America Online Inc. said they will collaborate to develop next-generation entertainment services that can be accessed using Sony's PlayStation2 (PS2) video game console.

PlayStation2 game machine

The two firms say they plan to create an environment for PS2 users which they can enjoy AOL services such as instant messaging, chat rooms and e-mail. They also will develop a version of the Netscape browser that runs on the PS2 machine.

In order to assure AOL's services and Web browsing via the PS2, a range of new peripheral products designed especially for the gaming console -- including a hard disk drive, a liquid-crystal display of NTSC/PAL and XGA-capable, a keyboard and a mouse -- will start appearing in stores before the end of the year.

PS2 software development kits also will begin to include features to make them compatible with AOL's services, which means that PS2 software developers will be able to creat applications that use AOL services.
