Tench,

Main thrust of all that was marketing and managing the marketing
bounce. That was/is my read of Amy's paragraph I cut and pasted
in reply. From that, we see that managing Itanium's marketing is/was
fatally flawed from the outset. Reason: extremely long slippages.
EV7 doesn't suffer the same fate as following are spins on EV6 that
keep getting stronger and within a few months EV6 boxes will be back
at the top of Spec2000 and TPC-C. Itanium is still vapor for another
two weeks. Two different pockets of slippages.

Alpha is shipping, new Alphas will be shipping.
IA64 goes live in a couple weeks, IA64 isn't shipping buyable boxes.

So shifting the argument to a future processor (EV7) is bothersome at
best. The topic was Itanium marketing. Amy talks about managing it , keeping
things quiet, behind the scenes, etc. That is a dream as the schedule slipped
so bad analysts fell on their sword, they lost serioius face. Their "analysis" became
little more than suck-up pieces. IBM points out that the slippage has seriously
impacted their plans:

news.cnet.com

"Every vendor's [IA64] plans have changed considerably. We had much
more aggressive plans 18 months ago," said Jay Bretzmann,
product marketing manager for IBM's X series of servers.

Very interesting marketing story coming up shortly.
Can't wait to see the spin on this. Orwell will roll turn over in his
grave in a few weeks I am sure.
