"The people who work for Ashcroft" are career civil servants. They were there before Ashcroft, and they will be there when he's gone. If you think that not even one of them would feign religious fervor to curry favor with the boss of the moment, you have a higher opinion of bureaucrats - and, probably, of the human race - than I do.

Do you honestly believe that when the prayer session is over, the boss sees the employees who attend as exact equals of those who do not? That there is not the slightest degree of favoritism toward those who share - or profess to share - the beliefs which he finds so central to his life? That he does not, on some level, feel that his fellow believers are more deserving of trust and favor than those who do not believe?
