IC foudries around the world have been cutting their foundry prices as demand remains slow. According to the “Commercial Times,” TSMC (2330 TT) has lowered its foundry prices by 10% to 20% since 2001, UMC (2303 TT) by 30% for major customers. The price of some memory prices at Chartered Semiconductor, another IC foundry, located in Singapore, is said to have dropped 50% since 2001. Though the demand for chips is likely to pick up in 3Q01 as some vendors like Microsoft or Nintendo will launch their new products in 4Q01, we still take a conservative outlook on TSMC and UMC in 2H01 because some South Korean chipmakers such as Hynix and Samsung are likely to shift some of their capacities to production at their IC foundries.
