Good article, and a well- established effect. Why do stores have sales? Because they sell more, and deplete surplus inventory.

I used to deal with a second- hand bookstore, already very cheap. Whenever they had a sale, I would spend two or three times as much. But even more important, I would buy books I would not ordinarily, books I was not sure I cared about or would read, because it was easier to make "wasteful" purchases if the prices were down.
