You're mixing up two different questions.

Do people tend to favor, often unconsciously, those who share their principles, their beliefs? Of course they do. I, for example, prefer the company of intelligent people to that of less intelligent people. Prejudice, no doubt. And there are lots of people I know and get along with fine who are on the lower spectrum of intelligence. But if i'm choosing who to invite over for dinner, or who to go out to a business lunch with, I have my clear preferences. You probably prefer the company of atheists or agnostics or even the mildly religious to that of fundamentalists. How many close friends do you have who are practicing evangalistic fundamentalists? When was the last time you had one over for dinner?

So as to the part of your question whether Ashcroft "show the slightest degree of favoritism toward those who share the beliefs which he finds so central to his life?" of course he will. As gays will show slight favoritism to other gays as opposed to rabid homophobes. And on and on.

But will Ashcroft favor those who attend his private sessions over those who don't, because of that attendance? Of course, neither of us knows, but I don't make the automatic assumption that you do that he will act wrongly. Maybe your life experiences have encouraged you to expect the worst of people. Mine haven't. So I give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves himself unworthy of it. And so far nobody has shown any evidence of such improper favoritism or that it has affect his job performance.
