I am not saying that every drilling results in an environmental catastrophe. I am saying that at some point it will. Given that we cannot control all variables, that moment will come-the law of unintended consequences, entropy, whatever.... There may not be any real environmental risk involved in ANWR. Just an esthetic one. And you can laugh at that, too. To think that there's some sort of environmental police deciding what everyone else's esthetics should be. But you know what, that's something that's probably impossible to measure. If we ever do come to know just exactly what value esthetics have in our lives, it will probably be too late to recover it.
