Ready For WLAN To Take Off
10/23/2000
special.northernlight.com

"Aerzone already has its WLAN networks up in the Vancouver and Ottawa airports in Canada and has an agreement with Delta Airlines to put in the service at its frequent flyer lounges in 53 airports. "

Starbucks:
mobilestart.com

Different ways of delivering the service to the devices includes WLAN (Starbucks coffee plans to install WLAN in 300 coffee shops around the US)

And it is not limited to the US..

idg.net

"Telenor Mobil and Finnish equipment manufacturer Nokia Corp. have reached an agreement to deliver wireless LANs (local area networks) to airports, hotels and other traffic-intensive locations in Norway, Nokia said Wednesday."

"I'm really surprise a cynic can expect Wi-Fi market going out of enterprise level of use. Once you have the WLAN, the top thing you gonna do is not let anybody else using it but you(your company). "

It's a valued added service to the consumer.. That has marginal costs to the Shopping Mall/Grocery Store. etc.. It is a Stand Alone WLAN network.. It does not directly integrate into the croporate LAN..

I could wire my Local Grocery store for about $1300... and $35 a month.. Including all the 802.11 stuff the routers/DHCP servers etc.. It would take a DSL line, a DSL router/w/ integrated DHCP server. $149.00, and four Airport Transcievers $299. each.. And a couple hundred feet of Cat 5. Thats it.. My home has just one router and one Airport.. But, my next door neighbor uses my DSL Connection..

And these stores will be able to push advertising to their clients.. In addition.. In store GPS type transmitters will be available.. So when you Walk by that Frozen Food Aisle and with a top of a PDA.. You can find out what is on sale!! Nutrition Comparison, etc.. These are services that a Wireless Provider will never be able to provide on a product by product basis..
