"802.11 is a wonderful technology, but the overall business cases for it are pretty strained. "

Of course this could be said about the whole wireless data business as a whole.. Big promises and capabilities.. Billions spent.. Where are the customers? It's like I have stated before. Data is considered a "Second Class Citizen".. Voice is where the money is for the Operators..

For example, It costs me .35 cents a minute to send "streaming data" (my voice) to Argentina.. Yet, I can send the entire contents of the Library of Congress to Argentina for almost Free with Data. It all has to do with expectations.. People are used to paying for Voice. Data is seen as almost Free..

Is there any money in Mobile Data? Maybe.. But, not much.. at least not enough to offset the costs of massive infrastructure bills, and spectrum rights.... Even Globastar seems to be having a hard time of it in even those remote locations.

Anonymous connections on a stand-alone network tied to a DSL router.. . No security worries for the most part. That's where it will end up.. After all, like I said.. You can wire a store for less than $1200 dollars.. In a year. That price will be down to $500 dollars.. And 802.11g looks even more promising.. Wireless Networks done Cheap. No authentication.. etc.. After all, It's the Internet. It's FREE.. Just ask NetZero..
