But will Ashcroft favor those who attend his private sessions over those who don't, because of that attendance? Of course, neither of us knows, but I don't make the automatic assumption that you do that he will act wrongly.

Even if he doesn't act wrongly, he is creating the perception that there is an in group and an out group at that office, and a perception of favoritism, even if inaccurate, can be as damaging to performance as the reality. Every manager knows the importance of appearance and perception: deliberately giving one group of employees greater access to you - or simply appearing to do so - because of a shared personal belief is a practice that divides a group and generates internal conflict.

You probably prefer the company of atheists or agnostics or even the mildly religious to that of fundamentalists. How many close friends do you have who are practicing evangalistic fundamentalists? When was the last time you had one over for dinner?

No fundamentalists so far, though an Episcopal minister is a regular guest. But we aren't talking about dinner tables here; we're talking about workplaces. I have handled workplaces with fundamentalists present, and I don't think anyone in those workplaces, fundamentalist or atheists, ever had any idea what my religious beliefs were. It's a private matter that has no place in a workplace.

Why do some people have such a hard time keeping private matters private?
