But you can't cut energy usage by 1/2 without some extreme lifestyle changes. Everyone would have to use mass transit even if it means that they give up their nice homes and move to compact super high rise apartments in the city. All of the security lights would need to be shut off. And that has to include all business and government. And no aircraft because that burns energy too fast.

Pete, I have not heard anyone say half....in CA, the worst I heard was 10%. Your scaring yourself with all these worst case scenarios. Instead of turning off the lights, owners may be required to put in low energy bulbs instead of the standard. You would be surprised how many owners don't know that energy saving light bulbs exist...btw they save $$$ too. You won't be forced to move from your house but you may have to carpool.

Here in Seattle they asked us to voluntarily save water and energy; otherwise we may have to contend with rolling blackouts this summer like CA. Well, they just announced that water consumption and energy consumption had dropped enough so that we should get through the summer without blackouts. Consumption was down X percent for energy [didn't hear what they said] and 30% for water. This kind of consumption drop in a city that already uses less water now than in the 1970's in spite of a larger population.

So stop the fretting...right now the only thing that can get us out of our current mess quickly is conservation; everything else, whether its nuclear or electrical or windmill, will take years to get build.
