HONG KONG - Authorities in Hong Kong have ordered more than a million birds destroyed to try to stop the spread of a disease that poses a remote risk to people.

Scientists insist humans can't contract this strain of avian influenza. But people are terrified because of six deaths during a similar outbreak back in 1997.

"Even though this virus won't affect humans, it's acute and virulent among chickens and is spreading swiftly," Secretary for the Environment and Food Lily Yam said Friday.

"There is always the possibility, however remote, that this virus may combine with other strains to give rise to a new strain, which may affect human beings," she told a news conference.

Over the next two weeks, about 1.2 million chickens, ducks, geese and quail will be destroyed on more than (cont)
