John: I don't think TV is cost effective. Radio, Print, in-store promotions, and event sponsorships would be more productive, in my opinion.

AMD is actually rather active in the latter. Everything from soccer matches to platform conferences over (PC) gaming leagues. There is one major problem, however. Event sponsorships do not allow a clear message to come across - only a few words (mainly the name and logo). For AMD this means that maybe 95% of the audience at a soccer match have no clue what the heck AMD is and no amount of event sponsorship is going to enable these people to associate AMD with high performance microprocessors.

TV advertising, on the other hand, is an extremely effective medium at bringing such detailed awareness to the viewer. This awareness could then be reinforced by event sponsorships, radio spots etc., but to exclude the TV portion would, imho, be a big mistake.
