John,

ANWR doesn't not have to be beautiful in the eyes of an oilman in order to be preserved. Because it's an unlivable place for most species, the caribou sees it as a haven to raise their young, being less threaten during the early months of the lives.
As to Alaskans receiving $1800 a piece, which should explain why some of them want this drilling, you are talking about people in welfare that need that money, and if you tell them there's another way to earn those funds they'll run for it. look at the history of those people, and you'll see that preservations runs deep into their beliefs.
As to developing those lands in order to increase the resources for our growing economy is B.S. It’s pure, old economy B.S. It'll not only take years to develop those lands (it's not just one area, but all the areas to support the roads and pipelines...), but it'll create a very small increase in supply. If you think 6-10 years ahead, and the likely increase in oil consumption by then, you'll see that this plan is a short -term solution to a long-term problem. we don't need new oil reserves, but rather a different energy source (such as fuel cell).
