GPRS-slayer,
<< I don't recall any specific information as to when the MSM 5100 would ship commercially, except to note that Q's site says it will do so in 2001. >>
On March 7, 2001, Don Schrock evidently told attendees at the Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Semiconductor & Systems Conference that the "first MSM3300 handsets (MSM5100) expected in Asia in Q201, and available shortly thereafter in the US"
This means that 1xRTT really beats Nokia's initial (and none to glamorous) GPRS models to market ... does it not?

<< As I see it, the MSM 5105 was not so much "based" on the 3000 series as it was necessarily designed to be usable on CDMA One networks. As a result, it naturally had to adopt many of the 3000's features. You have to admit that the 5105 has a lot more bells and whistles >>
As I see it, the MSM 5105, was an expedient to get off the very dated (2 generations back) trial platform.
It is now called "value tier" by Irwin, rich, Don, etc.
As Irwin pointed out at annual meeting ... the increased buffering of the MSM5100 (not to mention other features) is really necessary to support AOD/VOD.
My KYO 6035 is my 2nd MSM3100 based handset.
My first 1xRTT handset will not have the MSM3100, instead it will be the MSM5100 from the "Mainstream" tier.
MSM6xxx ... a ways away. A drawing on a PowerPoint slide. Some call that Slideware.
Slayed any GPRS lately?
... tough task when it appears there is no GSM/MAP based cdma2000 solution being commercialized to that dated cross-modal 1xRTT phase 0 standard. <g>
