As I understand it, Ashcroft is pretty silly, but also quite secure in his self righteousness. The self-anointed one, as it were. I wouldn't care that much, except that his holiness is going to be vetting all federal court appointments for the next 4 years. Who can say how many Scalia-Thomas types he'll find to stuff the bench with? That's where his main lasting damage will be done.
