Jim, Re: >>Also, will Intel get to count these XBOX chips as overall CPU market share? If so, AMDs market share will take a beating by 2002. But it will be misleading. <<

It won't really matter whether or not the chips count officially or not. It will be definitely detrimental to Intel in the long run to sell these X-box chips to Microsoft at such a low cost. Screwing Sony will have a cost and it won't be pretty.

The line between game box and traditional computer blurs significantly once a hard drive and, more importantly a broadband connection is added. Microsoft will market the pee out of X-box this Christmas with very little attention going to selling PC software (XP Office) . All the attention of the media will go only to Gaming boxes during the critical 4th quarter of this year. I guess the 2nd and 3rd quarter will be ugly this year , but that's acceptable. Having the 4th quarter tank will unleash a very ugly chain of events. Winning short term by price wars isn't going to translate to long term gains anymore (even for Dell).

It becomes a game of chicken that no one wins.
AMD "I can cut off two of my fingers and my thumb." Intel replies " Oh yeah well I can cut off my left hand and both legs.(recent P4 price cuts) " AMD replies "We're gonna tank mobile ASPs... with our Palomino..."
It's time for both Intel and AMD to cut each other some slack!!!
Intel is not a long term core holding because computer chips will not command the premium that they did even a few short months ago.
