There are no other alternatives

I don't buy it. Conservation is way under estimated. I have cut my energy usage by 40 percent..mostly by turning off computers that are not being used and turning off lights that are not being used. I can do better by replacing light bulbs with compact florescents. I can reduce NG usage by just replacing the furnace with a new efficient model. Cars could be more energy efficient if it were mandated...we have been going backward with average MPG.

Energy conservation alone could mitigate the need for increased energy supply. Fossil fuel plants should be replaced with newer more efficient plants...reducing the need for fossil fuels. It is a necessity as fossil fuel production will peak in the not too distant future. Increasing the need for fossil fuel is irresponsible.

Growth in energy needs can easily be met with alternate sources. There is a lot of solar potential. Domestic hot water is competitive now...passive solar heating is also competitive. Wind is competitive now too. Dismissing wind because it will not meet 25 percent of our energy needs is malarky...it doesn't have to. There are plenty of alternatives. We need diversity. Excess wind power can be used in conjunction with hydro...pump the excess water uphill or make hydrogen with it....it's an engineering problem.

Photovoltaic is also on the horizon. I could generate enough juice for my own needs on my own roof...it won't be long before the cost is low enough to do so. Tidal turbines are an interesting alternative. There are huge amounts of waste biomass that ends up in landfills. Digest biomass and make methane (natural gas) or make bio diesel with it and run trucks on it.

The problem with alternatives is dollars. Where is the lobby for alternatives?...environmentalists are about the only ones pushing for it. How does government or industry make dollars on solar? No one gets a dime for passive solar heating....maybe the architect and the builder. Government and industry don't make money on solar cells either...except for the initial sale of the PV cells...money stops changing hands. Government likes to tax and business likes a revenue stream. Without a government or industry push alternatives will be left to grass roots.
