Ish,

Your post reminded me of the first time I fired any kind of shotgun. When I was in northern Wisconsin in the late forties, early fifties, everyone had a rifle of some kind; mine was a Stevens Model 20 from Sears that I got for Xmas at age seven. The adults had a variety; 30-06, 30-30, etc etc. Anyway, there were some antiques around and one day I was encouraged to shoot someone's 8 ga., which as I recall had an Octagon barrel and seemed to weigh almost as much as I did. I was 9 yrs old and probably weighed 65 lb soaking wet. The adults placed me in front of a large old maple tree and had me shoot at some forgotten target. I slammed into that tree like I was a cannonball catcher in the Olympics. It made such an impression on me that I have never fired a shotgun since; rifles and handguns, yes, but no handheld artillery pieces like that 8 ga. I would bet that thing could stop a charging Rhino as long as it was propped against a suitable backstop (like a steel bridge)!
