Cabletron Systems Ranks Top Ten for Technology Patents
Aprisma, Enterasys and Riverstone Lead Industry in Number of Technology Patents, According to Technology Review and CHI Research
ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 2001-- Cabletron Systems, (NYSE: CS - news) a holding company for leading networking and telecommunications companies, today announced that Technology Review, in coordination with CHI Research, ranks Cabletron in the top ten on its Patent Scorecard for the quantity and quality of its technology patents.
``I am very proud of this distinction given that Cabletron has a rich history of investing in research and development to create innovative technology,'' said Piyush Patel, president, chairman and CEO of Cabletron Systems. ``Cabletron's operating companies have strong roots in R&D for data networking and infrastructure management, and are continuing Cabletron's commitment to deliver best of breed products for our customers.''
The Technology Review and CHI Research determined Cabletron's ranking for the Patent Scorecard by reviewing the company's technology strength, number of patents, current impact index, science linkage, and technology cycle time. Cabletron joins other market leaders on the top ten list, including: Alcatel, AT&T, BCE, Ericsson Telephone, Lucent Technologies, Motorola, Nokia, Qualcomm and Verizon Communications.
With over 1,300 engineers and over 683 patents, the Cabletron operating companies; Aprisma Management Technologies, Enterasys Networks and Riverstone Networks, are able to consistently deliver premier networking solutions ahead of the market.
``High tech companies must continue to churn out innovative products at a rapid pace in order to stay ahead of their competitors,'' said John McConnell, a leading industry analyst with McConnnell Associates. ``Cabletron's growing intellectual property portfolio is first an indication of the leading edge focus of their efforts; second, it is a competitive barrier to entry as other companies try to duplicate their capabilities without infringing on their patents. This is a clear competitive advantage that gives each of its operating companies a strong foothold in their respective markets.''
Aprisma has just been awarded a new patent for Apparatus and Method for Network Capacity Evaluation and Planning (please see Aprisma news release: Aprisma Awarded U.S. Patent, May 21, 2001). This Aprisma innovation reduces the complexity associated with understanding, managing and reducing traffic. Enterasys Networks holds over 586 worldwide technology-related patents, including a recently approved patent on Packet-over-SONET technology that is related to the new IEEE 802.3ae standard for 10-Gigabit Ethernet. Enterasys' holds the number one position in worldwide modular Layer 3 port shipments according to a recent study by Dell'Oro group. Riverstone Networks holds 44 issued and pending patents focused on essential hardware-based packet processing technologies up to OC-768 data rates. These architectures allow wire-speed service creation capabilities to operate without impact on system performance. Riverstone is leading the metro market with programmable MPLS tunneling technology over key transport media including Gigabit Ethernet, 10-Gigabit Ethernet, SONET/SDH and ATM.
