Did you notice the recent decision in which the Scalia-Thomas types held that a police officer has the right, at his own sole discretion, to handcuff a woman, drag her away from her kids, and toss her in jail for a $50 traffic violation? I would have thought that such an opinion would be of considerable concern to anyone wishing to preserve basic civil liberties.

It amuses me to wonder what the reaction of conservatives would be if such an opinion were issued by, say, Janet Reno. I don't doubt that they would have howled in outrage. But since the decision came from their own people, it was accepted quite meekly.

I don't see much concern for the right to privacy or basic individual liberties on either side of the judicial fence, which is not an encouraging trend. It is also not encouraging that people on both sides of the political fence seem so willing to trade principle for political expedience.
