GROZNY, May 21, 2001 (Itar-Tass via COMTEX) -- Federal force helicopters made 11 combat sorties in Chechnya over the past 24 hours, one mission to rocket the village of Alkhazurovo near Urus-Martan wiping out a rebel camp and another firing on small rebel groups outside the village of Dargo.
Transport helicopters escorted five columns of troops and delivered cargo to outlying parts of the republic.

Troops continued security raids in the Chechen capital, Grozny, where 17 people were detained as suspected rebel fighters and eight held for passport offences.

Army sappers defused a powerful explosive device in Grozny's Staraya Sunzha suburb. Troops disarmed three land-mines in Chechnya's second-largest city, Gudermes, one made from six artillery shells.

Units of the commandant's office detained a truck carrying ten tonnes of stolen oil in the Shelkovskoy district.
