All-you-can-download 2.5G service for $11.50

British Telecom’s cellular division, BT Cellnet, has become one of the world’s first cellular operators to launch a commercial GPRS service for the masses.

Several operators in the Asia-Pacific region, including SingTel Mobile, SmarTone, PCCW, FarEasTone of Taiwan and China Unicom in Shenzhen, have launched pre-commercial and corporate trial services on their GPRS networks, but all have delayed commercial GPRS services due to handset shortages.

BT Cellnet declined to say how many T-260 handsets from Motorola it has managed to secure for its commercial launch. The phones will be sold through UK retail outlets of Carphone Warehouse, The Link and BT.

The new service will come in two packages: £7.99 ($11.50) with unlimited wireless Internet access, and £3.99 ($5.75) plus 2 pence sterling (2.88 cents) for each Web page downloaded.

Meanwhile, BT reportedly told its shareholders that the total cost of 3G in the UK will reach £20 billion, including the £4.03 billion it paid for its license.
