Paper trading is very important in my judgement even though there's no way to bring in ones emotions. I have been told this, and read it, on several occasions. I look on the paper-trading exercise as a way to :
1) get a better understanding what kind of system suits me.
2) develop a consistent pattern and approach (it's coming but I'm not there yet - I'm still "finding better approaches" and have spent time trying/learning how to evaluate them).
3) build confidence in a system, which will let me better deal with stress such as you described, when it happens.

In MSWIN, the scale problem doesn't occur. Two scales are allowed in a window. One thing I do notice is that the stddev curve can take a while to turn up; or it may be "higher than 0" because it is flattened out after coming down. This occurred in your PACC example on 05/12/97. I'll experiment with various charts and try to build my understanding.
