JNI No. 2 in Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters in 2000, Total Market to Exceed $4B by 2005, New Gartner Dataquest Research Shows

JNI Grew 168 Percent to Remain Fastest-Growing Among Major Independent Manufacturers

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 2001-- Independent industry research firm Gartner Dataquest has released new research in the Fibre Channel host bus adapter (HBA) market showing JNI® Corporation (Nasdaq:JNIC - news) is the No. 2 Fibre Channel HBA manufacturer in revenue.

In addition, Gartner Dataquest announced new research showing the Fibre Channel HBA market will grow from $540 million in 2000 to $4.25 billion by 2005.

JNI, which posted $103 million in revenue in 2000, grew from $38.5 million in HBA sales in 1999, a rate of 168 percent. Based on this information, JNI remains the fastest-growing of the three major independent HBA manufacturers in 1999 and 2000. The company holds a 19-percent market share, growing at a slightly faster rate than market leader Emulex over the calendar year, and stayed ahead of No. 3 manufacturer QLogic in market share revenue.

``JNI continues to dominate the Solaris market and high-end enterprise HBA market based on its revenue,'' said James Opfer, principal analyst with Gartner Dataquest Storage Group and author of the study. ``Our survey shows the rise of independent HBA manufacturers, with the top three players capturing 70 percent of the total market revenue.

``Yet no Fibre Channel HBA manufacturer has more than one-third market share, reflecting the wide-open competitiveness that remains in the industry,'' Opfer added. ``JNI is clearly one of the leading players in this fast-growing segment of the storage industry.''

``JNI remains the fastest-growing Fibre Channel HBA manufacturer in the industry and we retained our No. 2 position in sales revenue,'' said Neal Waddington, president and CEO of JNI Corporation. ``Given the average selling price of our products -- which are significantly higher than our competition -- we believe JNI clearly dominates the high availability, enterprise-level market for HBAs, which the Gartner Dataquest study shows will offer the greatest increase in demand in the coming years.

``JNI continues to offer the broadest selection of host bus adapters of any company today: we have single and dual-port SBus and PCI, 1 and 2 Gb PCI and SBus, and support multiple operating systems including Windows 2000, Windows NT, HP-UX, AIX, Linux, Novell, Mac OS, as well as Solaris in all Fibre Channel topologies,'' Waddington said. ``We have shipped our second-generation 2 Gb adapter and announced we will ship a family of HBAs with native PCI-X support, CompactPCI (CPCI) and Low Profile PCI (LPPCI) later this year. No company can match our depth, breadth or technology leadership in shipping enterprise-quality Fibre Channel storage adapter products to customers.''

The Gartner Dataquest research also shows a long-term robust market, despite recent downturns in capital spending. Fibre Channel HBA revenue is expected to grow to $810 million in 2001 and to $1.14 billion in 2002.

The news comes from two sources, a Gartner Dataquest alert entitled, ``Fibre Channel HBAs: Consolidation of Leadership in 2000,'' and a report entitled, ``Fibre Channel: Building On Core Competency for SANs.''
