we are all closer to molluscs than interstellar travel.

Hmmm, I figure if we can make it through another 550 million years we'll probably have reached the stars... check with me then? <g>

Now be nice to Charles, he's the best of a spoilt bunch. At least 1/4 of him is Anglo-Norman... then it's Graeco-German, which is really quite a scarey mix if you think about it.

Given a 'formal' head of state appears a necessity, I'm not sure if there's any good way. Combine with an existing post? Too much power in one set of hands, too little time, and IMO the HoS should be above politics anyhow. Elections? Oh goodie, so you get another superannuated politician - and to be frank, I'd prefer a monarch, hopefully less partisan. Hereditary? Well, it's neutral, and you're spared elections, but you do end up with some useless t*ssers and a nasty relic of patronage. Random lottery? heheheh. That might be fun.

Irish coins are the nicest I've seen, BTW - very nice designs.

But just think - if not for our English ancestors, you might now be speaking French <g>

(ps what is "Johnny on the spot"? Good? Bad?)
