So what have been the major reasons for war.

1) Coveting possessions / wealth (food, resources fall into this one).

2) Bureaucrats diverting attention to weaker members of society (whether within or without geographical boundries). The hindus fall into this one.

I'm sure there are plenty of others but these two seem to be the main themes throughout history with many sub themes.
