I should have been more specific: Windows enables rogue applications; UNIX traps them and protects the system. The Windows model was OK for cheap systems when you had 5 or 6 programs and services running. My Win2000 system has 41 system applications and 5 user applications running at this moment. Even with the MS latest and greatest, I still get lockups on occasion (every 2-3 weeks). My Solaris 2.7 machine runs without a hitch until I power it down voluntarily, used to be months but I'm more electricity conscious now.
