Wrong. At 50 mph air effects a boat more than the water does so I say the best speed is the lowest that your car kicks into overdrive.

Idling is not good but it doesn't burn gas as fast as at speeds. I remember my 706 would burn a tank in about 6 hour of pulling a disc but hook the pto to a pump, stick on a Murphy switch and let it idle and it would run for days on a tank.
