I have a friend who is a retired engineer from UTC's Pratt and Whitney aircraft division. Had breakfast with him yesterday and he commented one of his friends is now in the fuel cell division (part of Hamiliton Standard which is a major supplier to NASA). He mentioned platinium is a catalyst in the fuel cell.

I assume its true. Don't know the quanity used per cell. I do know the auto industry is on a major incentive to reduce the reliance on paladium in the converters.
