Monarchic popularity is very variable - look at the history of the English ones, after all... - but I think it may be something to do with the continuity, the sense of shared history, combined with the relative inevitability (so that it tends not to be seen as a problem needing solving).

It must have some connection to the societal culture, though. North/West Europe (Spain, too?) seem to have a near-monopoly... constitutional monarchy, historically sea-faring, outgoing (not to mention invasive) but then, what of Thailand, Nepal and Japan? Not so well-regarded to live in, perhaps - so far.
If there isn't a thesis on this yet I'll bag it now for mine in a few years time <g>
