I doubt there's a thesis on it, though there may be. But it does raise some interesting issues. If you start with the basic assumption that at some point virtually every major culture was a monarchy -- I haven't thought seriously about this, and if I knew my anthropology well enough I'm sure I would come up with lots of exceptions (weren't the Mayans priest ruled? And were the Amerindian chiefs selected based on hereditary or merit?) but certainly monarchy was at the dominant form of goverrnent in many, if not most, cultures.

If so, then the question is why did it get abandoned where it did get abandoned, why did it stick around where it did stick around, and what were the societal consequences on the cultures that made each choice?

Where are you in your educational process that a thesis is a few years down the road, and what are your subjects?
