iXsystems (Formerly BSDi) Delivers Breakthrough 1U Internet Server
SAN JOSE, CA -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- 22-05-2001 -- Just weeks after iXsystems (formerly BSDi) adopted its new name and business focus on the rackmount server market, the company has announced its first new product -- the ultra-compact iXtreme™ 1400 1U rack-optimized Internet server. Occupying one third less space and running up to 20 percent cooler than other 1U servers, the ultra-compact iXtreme 1400 server delivers maximum horsepower per square inch of rack space, while supporting demanding Internet applications such as e-mail servers, DNS servers, Web servers and firewalls.
iXsystems also announced that customers who purchase iXtreme™ server products before June 30th 2001 will receive free on-site service for one year.
"We're pleased to deliver a breakthrough in rack-optimized server technology to herald the change of our company name and business focus," said Gary Johnson, CEO of iXsystems. "The iXtreme 1400 is the new state-of-the-art 1U rack-optimized server system that demonstrates just how serious we are about raising the bar for performance and value in Internet servers."
Less Than Two Thirds the Size of Other 1U Servers
The iXtreme 1400 is the first of iXsystems' new ultra-compact 1U servers. At only 15 inches deep, it offers the high performance and scalability usually found only in 1U servers that are 24 inches deep. With a footprint less than two thirds that of other 1U servers, the iXtreme 1400 saves dramatically on costly real estate in Internet data centers and co-location centers. Every inch of space in the iXtreme 1400 is optimized to support the high-performance system board and disk drives. Optimized cabling and cooling fans also contribute to the iXtreme 1400's radically small footprint.
Runs Up to 20 Percent Cooler
The iXtreme Series 1400's unique airflow design keeps the system cool under the most extreme conditions. The iXtreme 1400 funnels the airflow from two redundant fans into a "super snorkel" that distributes the air directly onto the CPUs. This unique cooling system enables the iXtreme 1400 to operate in environments with temperatures of up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, making it ideal for Internet data centers and service providers with environments that are not super-cooled.
Whereas many 1U servers use only a single high-speed blower, creating a single point of failure and restricting the flow of air, the iXtreme Series 1400 uses eight fans to cool the CPUs, disk drives, and power supplies. By using multiple fans, iXsystems engineers were able to distribute the fans throughout the chassis so that if one happens to fail, the others continue to keep the system cool. The iXtreme 1400 is also easy to maintain by simply removing the top cover to service the snap-on/snap-off components.
Superior Performance and Flexibility
For co-locators and service providers, the iXtreme 1400 sets new standards in ROI by delivering the best performance available today in an ultra-compact 1U footprint. In its high-end configuration, the iXtreme 1400 includes two powerful Pentium III processors and up to 4GB of memory. Combined with high-performance SCSI disks and dual-Ethernet ports, the new iXtreme 1400 server delivers the performance and power needed for almost any Internet application. All iXtreme servers from iXsystems can be custom-configured for a wide range of Internet services and come installed with the customer's choice of operating system -- BSD, Linux, Solaris, or Windows NT/2000. The iXtreme 1400 can be custom-configured to support higher processor speeds, larger-capacity hard drives, or other options required to deliver the ideal Internet solution.
