well, IBM and INTC seem to disagree............QLogic Begins External Testing of First InfiniBand Switch
ALISO VIEJO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 2001--QLogic Corp. (Nasdaq:QLGC), the only end-to-end storage area network (SAN) infrastructure provider, today announced testing of the world's first InfiniBand switch with IBM eServer Intel(R)-based systems. The QLogic InfiniBand switch is being used to connect IBM's eServer xSeries(a) in cluster communication tests at the IBM eServer lab. QLogic is the first company to announce InfiniBand switch testing outside its own labs.
InfiniBand switched fabric architecture enables multiple devices to be connected without performance degradation and is positioned to replace shared buses such as PCI, as the next server-to-server interconnect or server-to-peripheral connection. QLogic InfiniBand switches will enable InfiniBand-based server clusters to work with existing Fibre Channel-based SANs.
"We are pleased QLogic has chosen to work with us to advance the development of InfiniBand architecture and products," said Dr. Tom Bradicich, director, eServer xSeries Architecture & Technology, IBM. "The new InfiniBand standard traces its lineage back to the channel technology originally pioneered by IBM on mainframe computers in the 1960s. IBM eServer will leverage this legacy and incorporate technologies such as InfiniBand into industry standard servers."
"This is a major milestone for InfiniBand as we transition from early product development to the OEM testing phase in IBM's eServer labs," said Rob Davis, vice president of advanced technology, QLogic Corporation. "As InfiniBand continues to progress from the labs, to systems integration and finally to customers, enthusiasm and support for the technology continues to build."
QLogic's InfiniBand products promise to unify storage, networking and clustering, positioning them in the heart of the data center. With proven I/O interconnect technology and products in SCSI, Fibre Channel, InfiniBand and iSCSI (Ethernet), QLogic is uniquely positioned to deliver on this promise. Featuring 16 full-duplex data ports each running at 2.5 Gigabits per second, QLogic InfiniBand switches have an internal subnet manager, which means they are plug and play and do not require external management software. The switch supports both fiber and copper ports.
InfiniBand architecture is being developed by the InfiniBand Trade Association, an independent, non-profit organization with over 200 members from every segment of the industry.
QLogic simplifies SAN implementations by providing OEMs, system integrators and resellers with a single point of contact for end-to-end SAN hardware and software. QLogic saves customers time and resources by providing a portfolio of hardware, software and service components. With these tools, OEMs and resellers can develop and deploy SAN connectivity solutions faster, more cost effectively and with less risk.
