Plus, if he's been there for 12 years, he ought to be fairly confident of having some personal following - maybe enough to tip the balance in a re-election and legitimise his move.

As I say, politically I applaud and approve (I know you don't) because I prefer the policies of the Democrats. But ethically I think any defection is questionable - and really unacceptable so soon after the election, since Bush hasn't exactly made any policy reversals. I abhor many of the decisions he's made, I think they'll be bad for the long-term health and wealth of the US, but I can't say there have been many surprises... so Jeffords can hardly claim he's having to represent things he wasn't elected on.

After all, an experienced politician is unlikely to have been so thoroughly deceived over the quality of Dubya and the plans of the oil barons as the rest of the Bush voters <g>

Ah well, I think that's twice we've publicly agreed on something now ;)
