ADRs of Alcatel (ALA:NYSE ADR - news) were down 6.6% in late morning trading on news that the French telecommunications company was progressing in talks to buy U.S. rival Lucent (LU:NYSE - news).

Boards for both companies have given approval for continued talks in a potential deal valued at $34 billion. Lucent was down 2.8%.
