I think you've sensed the confusion here. Intel has been saying for months they will support DDR with the i845. I don't think that has changed. (And they support DDR in Servers).
What they also have been saying for month's is they will limit support to DDR200, apparently for technical reasons. (Note: their input to JEDEC only impacts the spec's for DDR200, PC1600. They stated to JEDEC in no uncertain terms they have no interest in DDR266).

It's probable that P4/DDR will slip in between SDRAM and DRDRAM at introduction. DDR could eventually migrate down into the SDRAM space.
