Taliban Proposes Labeling Hindus

Business Editors
ADVISORY...

--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 2001--

TOPIC: The Taliban rulers in Afghanistan reportedly have proposed
forcing Hindus in the country to wear an identity label to distinguish
them from the Muslim majority. According to a story in the New York
Times, Taliban officials -- already scorned for their harsh treatment
of women and their destruction of Buddhist statues -- insisted that
the scheme was a "harmless effort" to "safeguard" Hindus from
harassment. The proposal would have to be approved by the supreme
Taliban leader to take effect, the story said. The plan appears to
have already drawn international criticism, especially from India,
which has a Hindu majority, the story said.
