My reading of the context is that Jesus was in a defensive position, and not a teaching one. He gives a very Clinton-esque denial-but-not-really to being a descendant of David.

Jesus uses a common teaching tool, of asking a question and letting the students come to their conclusions for themselves...

If Jesus' intention was to educate and not to silence, then he did a lousy job of it...
