Idexx sees Q2 operating loss

WESTBROOK, Maine, June 12 (Reuter) -Idexx Laboratories Inc said on Thursday that it expects to report an operating loss for the second quarter, due to lower than expected sales, increased investment spending and higher inventories.

Operating results for the year are expected to fall below analysts' estimates of $0.38 a share for the year, Idexx said. Idexx was expected to report $0.02 a share, according to First Call's consensus of analysts estimates.

Also, Idexx said the U.S. District Court in Maine has ruled that five canine heartworm diagnostic kits formerly sold by Idexx infringe upon a patent owned by The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis.

The court's ruling was a response to a summary judgement motion by Jewish Hospital in its pending patent infringement suit, which is expected to go to trial in October 1997.

The company said it will continue to defend itself in the lawsuit and that it does not believe it infringes upon any patents.

The ruling will not affect sales of three current heartworm diagnostic products, Idexx said.

Idexx reported 1996 earnings of $32.6 million, or $0.83 a share, on sales of $267.7 million.
