Separately, speaking at Credit Suisse First Boston Corp.'s European Technology conference in Barcelona, Martin De Prycker said there are still many signs of overcapacity in markets, while its North American switching operations have slowed dramatically.

Mr. De Prycker said demand for Alcatel's long-haul optical backbone networks is also slowing. He said that any turnaround in North America is at least two quarters away.

European and Asian markets are relatively stable, although there are certain signs of slowdowns in specific markets on the Continent, Mr. De Prycker added.

The executive offered no figures, guidance or forecasts to accompany his comments. He took some questions from the floor but most were technical -- not financial -- in nature.
