non fiction CD review - Hard Times in Babylon - Eliza Gilkyson - 4 out of 5 stars

1) (Beauty Way - Hot Austin City Limits beat - Gary P. Nunn meets Lucinda Williams sound - best cut on the CD for mass commercial appeal - you can't help but start dancing)

"i worked the clubs along the sangre de cristos
polished the diamonds in the rough
by the time i hit L.A. i was hotter than a pistol
but you're never hot enough little darling
you're never really hot enough"

2) (Hard Times in Babylon - Beautiful tribute to a suicide a la Lucinda Williams' Car wheels on a Gravel Road and Sweet Old World)

"we gotta hang together when the air's this thin
hang out the masks for the oxygen
live for something
we're coming upon a time in our lives
when the little dream lives but the big dream dies"

3) (Highway - mellow tempo, love lost, reminiscent of her "Pilgrims" CD)

"you close your eyes, you turn the page and ease your mind open
remember i loved you, remember i loved you, remember"

4) (Coast - mellow dylan-esque, love lost tune - nice feeling)

"did you ever think it would be like this?
oh the price you pay for love
yeah the price you pay for everything"

5) (Engineer Bill - Monotonous tune but good lyrics and beat - reminds me of Lucinda's "Joy" on "Car Wheels")

"won't you pick me up in your one-eyed ford
won't you drive me home like a good little lord
won't you carry me through troublin' times
won't you fill my sail, won't you blow my mind"

6) (Persephone - Early Gykilson sound... it's too late for early Gilkyson - shed the green sleeves)

"hang on till the winter's end
till you rise like the sun again"

7) (Baby's Waking - Traditional sounding Folk or Country {yawn} - one of the few tracks that keep this CD from being a 5 star rating)

"oh my darling when you wake up i will surely be smiling
just to see you on the wagon with your baby blue eyes shining"

8) (Twisted - Bluesy... Edie Adams sound... Witty satire)

"i'm f**ked up so twisted
you're everything i've wanted in a man"

9) (Flatline - strange Jim Morrison-esque departure. If you like "The Doors", then open this one)

"you could go up on the internet Eliza, but christ, are you
really that desperate for a fix or a connection
lady chatterly in the chatroom surrealistic cyber bathroom
you can still come back with some kind of viral infection"

10) (In My Dreams - What a Wicked Chris Isaak sound -- beautiful)

"no moon is on the rise tonight
no car is in my drive tonight
no eyes look into my eyes no windows to my heart
'til i see you in my dreams"

11) (Walk Away From Love - Oooches - so many influences and similarities, Dylan, Baez, Dave Loggins, Chris Isaack, Williams {Lucinda and Dar}, Eliza... Beautiful song)

"if you can walk away from love
if you can turn away from love
if you can run away from love
then you're not my love"

12) (Sanctuary - 23rd Psalm and Joan Baez meet Eliza Gilkyson)

"yeah though i walk through the valley of the shadow
thou art with me
though my heart's been torn on the fields of battle
thou art with me"
