For What It Is Worth: I'd call their bluff and tell them to go ahead and disclose the bug, at the trade show, on national TV, with banners streaming from airplanes if that's what they want to do.

It can't be worse than it is: an unknown bug that allows web administrators access to files on users' hard drives. If it were disclosed, it would be embarrassing for a while, but the bug would get fixed and the bad PR would blow over.

The one thing Netscape should NOT do is pay these people any money. It would be like caving into terrorists. It would be bad for the whole industry. Every bozo with a bug report would try to hold whatever company suits his fancy hostage. With all the bugs that come up every day in IE, the bad precedent might even drive Microsoft into bankruptcy.;)

So, here's to "Hard-liner Homer."
