Your hypothetical analogy is flawed in that Jeffords did not bolt the Republican Party for the Democratic Party. Like Rep. Sanders of Vermont, Jeffords now is an Independent. My question to you is would you have shown such indignation and outrage had Zell Miller of Georgia declared he was quitting the Democratic Party for the Republican Party, or would you have joined the other right-wing extremists on this thread in high-fivin' each other?

Here is what has happened: In order to solidify his conservative base, GWB by necessity has had to exclude moderate Republicans ... the old Rockefeller Republicans ... from the inner workings of the party. In Jeffords' case, GWB got nasty with him because Jeffords didn't support the tax package. With Jeffords leading the way, it would not surprise me now to see other Republicans say adios to the GOP in the coming months. Sen. Chaffee of R.I. would be one candidate.

And where does Sen. John McCain stand in all this? Has Jeffords' defection aroused his maverick instincts? Or will McCain just sit back and continue to bedevil Bush as a member of the party?

Stay tuned.
