A merger is the corporate equivalent of a marriage, and its just as huge a change. One can debate what motivated the action, but every merger involves significant amounts of logistics which press releases tend to gloss over. For two small companies you can bet that these logistics will prove no small distraction for senior management at both companies over the next few quarters. Hence the market's reaction is to take a wait-and-see attitude until the situation clarifies itself. This is the essence of opportunity cost.
