You sound like a good reasonable person who lives a great life. As a way for the small farmer to go I was going to suggest ideas like the ones you have already embraced (low volume, high quality). Kind of like a microbrewery for food. Hard work pays off in America, and being smart helps quite a bit. I just think that if the message to small farmers was more in line with suggestions similar to your solutions it would be better than the "we need subsidy" message.

Not to be a stickler, but tomato has no "e", but tomatoes does. The english language is weird.
