Karen, "nutters" is just an Anglicism for "nuts" in my experience. The quaintness makes it seem a little milder here, to me anyway. I recall it showing up a lot in the Harry Potter books, as confirmed by this snippet:

149 Ways to Tell that You Are TOO Obsessed With Harry Potter members.tripod.com
43. You've started using words like "prat", "git", "jumper", "nutters", etc.

Too bad that one didn't make 42. I don't remember "jumper", but the American editors went so far as to substitute the totally non-resonant "Sorcerer's Stone" for the classic alchemical "Philosopher's Stone" in the title of the first book, so I imagine there was a lot of stuff dumbed out of the American editions. A random British page I happened to have around:

Nutters: there's alternative thinking and just plain oddness theregister.co.uk

Google turned up 12700 references. Neocon should appreciate #2, which was this site: nutters.org "The Association for the Advancement of Alternative Concepts and Epistemological Awareness" .
