You're right and whether God exists or not is irrelevant to your right to believe unimpeded by the state. Your only obligation to the state by your creed is to "render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's" that does not include changing or altering the dictates of your conscience or abnegation of your free will. Free will may be illusory, and if so what tribute would it be to Caesar to relinquish a phantom. God may very well not exist but they can't prove otherwise. Christianity is powerful because it puts bullies in their place.
