Another one bites the dust

nypost.com

It was a big deal when Oracle CEO Larry Ellison signed former Clinton press secretary Joe Lockhart to handle his public relations. This, of course, after Ellison got caught - figuratively, of course - going through Microsoft's garbage.

And, if anybody could deal with trash - trailer and otherwise - it's Lockhart.

The two were off to a good start when Lockhart helped rope in Bill Clinton to speak at an Oracle software developers' conference in New Orleans. A deal seemed to have been struck: The press secretary would learn a little bit about how Silicon Valley does business; the billionaire would learn how to get good ink.

But like lots of Ellison's relationships, this one seems to have ended. "They never really clicked," says one observer. "They just never got along." On top of that, Lockhart seems to have spent much of his time in Washington, D.C., coping with the furor over Clinton's pardon of Marc Rich.

Lockhart isn't responding - not even with his customary self-deprecating wit - to e-mail asking him to say it ain't so that he's leaving Oracle. And, as usual, Oracle p.r. folks didn't return a call to their office.

This is a silence that speaks volumes. It's looking like the talk around Silicon Valley and in Washington that Lockhart and Ellison have begun to part ways is coming true.
